Hallows Fell Comic Review – Definitely Worth a Read

Written by Thom Burgess

Illustrated by Izzy Stanic

Foreword by Corin Hardy

I decided long ago that I will never, ever marry. My reasons are far too numerous to list here, but one of them is that there’s just something incredibly morbid and draconian about being bonded for life to someone whom you’re probably not even sure you truly love. I don’t know Thom Burgess’ marital status, but I’m also pretty sure he also sees the concept of marriage for the outdated social construct it truly is. At least, that’s the impression I got from Hallows Fell, the latest in his series of black and white ghost comics.

There’s an old English legend about a hag who killed a young boy she caught trespassing on her land. Too bad for her, the boy happened to be the son of the village elder, who swiftly has the hag and her home burned to the ground in an act of retribution. The spirit of the deceased hag then demands that every single year the villagers present her with a groom… or suffer the consequences.

Anyway, our protagonist, Simon, is on his way to an outdoor wedding in the middle of nowhere; and yeah, you can probably see where this is going. In terms of plot, Hallows Fell was pretty predictable, but it made up for that with one hell of an unforgettable ending. I won’t spoil it here, but let’s just say that Simon had better have meant his wedding vows when he said them.

Like most of Burgess’ stories, Hallows Fell is set in the British countryside, which is swiftly disappearing to make room for towns and cities as our population spirals out of proportion. Further reason never to get married or start a family. As anyone who’s ever lived in the UK will tell you, our countryside can be beautiful by day and terrifying by night, something which illustrator Izzy Stanic clearly understands very well. The book’s main interior art was drawn in the style of freehand sketches, but with a stunning level of detail that you won’t find in many other black and white comics.

If rural ghost stores are your thing, Hallows Fell is definitively worth a read.

When it comes to horror comics, one of the most noteworthy and respected names in recent years is Tim Seeley, whose Hack/Slash series is celebrated for its originality and crossover appearances within the horror cinematic universe, such as Re-animator, Army of Darkness, and more. Now Seeley is returning to the world of horror in Imaginary Fiends, a brand new series from DC Comics imprint Vertigo.

A six-part miniseries that will hit shelves on November 22nd, Imaginary Fiends mixes science-fiction and horror in a delightfully creepy yet wonderful colorful story about monsters that live amongst us and the people who are assigned to keep them in check. The artwork from the series is done by Stephen Molnar (Star Trek).

In an interview with Syfy Wire, Seeley states, “Imaginary Fiends is a return to horror for me…a chance to tell a story about a broken person and her monster friend. But Fiends is darker, scarier, and more fanatical than anything I’ve ever done.”

We’ve been given the opportunity to exclusively present to you readers several pages from the first issue, all of which can be seen below!

Having read the first issue, I won’t spoil anything. I’ll simply say that it’s incredibly well written, blending humor with strong emotions, resulting in an engaging comic that is sure to entrance anyone who picks up an issue. Additionally, the visuals are magnificent and the colors rich and beautiful. I’m going to let my local comic book dealer know that they need to set aside every issue from here on out.

Sony Prepping Morbius Movie

Ah, Morbius, the Living Vampire! Such an underutilized member of the Marvel family. Thankfully, this much beloved cult favorite may finally be getting his due, though in a perfect world he’d get a crossover with Blade, but that’s very much wishful thinking, no?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a film based upon Morbius, who made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #101, is currently in development.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold, The Gods of Egypt, The Last Witch Hunter, Power Rangers) wrote the script, which was just submitted to the studio after a secret development process.

Character Description via Wikipedia:
Morbius, the Living Vampire, a scientist named Dr. Michael Morbius PhD, MD, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Roy Thomas and originally designed by penciler Gil Kane, the character first appeared as an antagonist in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (Oct. 1971). Morbius went on to become a heroic, tragically flawed protagonist in his own series and other titles. Morbius is a man suffering from vampiric abilities and physical traits resulting from a biochemical experiment, as opposed to supernatural means.

“Love is funny. Chainsaws are funny. Love AND chainsaws, therefore, is gonna be super funny,” says Jordan. “Basically, if you’ve ever wanted to see Cupid torn apart in increasingly hilarious ways, this is definitely the comic for you.”

“I just want everyone to laugh the same way they would watching Army of Darkness or This Is the End,” added DeLay.

Synopsis:
Love sucks. And Philo Harris is going to do something about it.

New Archie Horror Series Vampironica Is Out for Blood!

Vampironica is a new Archie Horror series launching in March from Greg and Megan Smallwood that we first heard about back in 2015 at the SDCC, and knowing what a big fan base the series has – plus the fact that American Werewolf in London and Fright Night were big influences on the writers, we thought we’d share the latest info on what’s in store for us come spring!

Here are the details of the series, including a look at all the various covers to be had.

From the Press Release:
She’s beautiful. She’s deadly. She’s Vampironica!

Greg and Megan Smallwood are bringing a new terror to the streets of Riverdale as Veronica Lodge is bitten by a centuries-old vampire in a new Archie Horror series launching this March – VAMPIRONICA.

After being turned, will Veronica’s new-found thirst for blood turn Riverdale into a haven for the undead, or will she put an end to the vampire threat herself? The team of Greg (co-writer, artist) and Megan Smallwood (co-writer) and letterer Jack Morelli are set to turn Riverdale red in the latest twisted take on the classic Archie Comics characters.

“Fans can rest assured that we’ll be staying faithful to the core of these characters,” said co-writer Greg Smallwood. “It was very important to Megan and I that Vampironica be the same Veronica that we all know and love, only now with fangs.”

“Greg and I were both very interested in exploring the concept of a vampire Veronica without getting rid of what makes Veronica such a special character,” said co-writer Megan Smallwood. “Ironically, Vampironica humanizes Veronica in a way that only horror can. Becoming a vampire is a humbling experience for her, and she’s forced to open up and expose a little vulnerability.”

The new series will explore how Veronica adapts to her new place as one of Riverdale’s freshest members of the undead while drawing influence from classic horror films.

“I’d say that our biggest influences are American Werewolf in London and Fright Night. Both films can be quite horrific, but there’s also a lot of strong characterization and humor to them,” said Greg. “I think horror works best with a small dose of comedy for levity so we’ve used the same formula on Vampironica.”

“Veronica Lodge is not the kind of girl to join any ranks, let alone vampire ranks. True to form, Veronica instead relies on her own gut instincts,” said Megan. “They haven’t let her down in life, and they won’t let her down as she navigates the surreal world of the undead.”

VAMPIRONICA #1 launches in comic shops and on digital platforms March 14, 2018, and features variant covers by Francesco Francavilla, Audrey Mok, Djibril Morrissette-Phan, and Marguerite Sauvage.

Synopsis:
When Veronica is bitten by a centuries-old vampire, her thirst for blood threatens to turn Riverdale into a haven for the undead. Will she put an end to the vampire threat or give in to her bloodlust?

CVR A Reg: Greg Smallwood

CVR B Var: Francesco Francavilla

CVR C Var: Audrey Mok

CVR D Var: Djibril Morrissette-Phan

AfterShock Comics Announces First Anthology Collection Titled Shock

AfterShock Comics continues to push boundaries by presenting Shock, its very first anthology collection featuring a slew of today’s top writers and artists. It arrives in March of next year, and we have a look at the cover plus a few interior pages for you along with quotes from several of the creators.

Presented in the “European Album” format (same as the recent Animosity: the Rise hardcover for LCSD), this handsome hardcover features the creative talents of Bill Willingham, Marguerite Bennett, Mike Carey, Jim Starlin, Michael Zulli, Charles Vess, Michael Gaydos, Andy Clarke, Andrew Robinson, Sarah Delaine, Phil Hester, Paul Jenkins, Neil Gaiman, Dalibor Talajic, Travis Moore, Brian Azzarello, Francesco Francavilla, Cullen Bunn, Marc Guggenheim, Frank Tieri, Brian Stelfreeze, and more.  The cover art is by John Cassaday.

Shock hails from Joe Pruett, the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated editor of the classic Negative Burn anthology series.

CREATOR QUOTES:

CULLEN BUNN: My story, “Blooderflies,” is a horror/dark fantasy yarn that tells a complete story in just 8 pages, but it should keep readers thinking about the setting and “what happens next” for some time to come. To me, that’s part of what makes AfterShock’s catalog so thrilling. These stories, short or long, really fire the imagination. I couldn’t be happier to be included alongside these amazing creators.

MARC GUGGENHEIM: “Metroclash” is an idea that’s been burning a hole in my notebook for years: What if cities could fight like people? It’s the kind of huge, visually-driven idea that could only be done in comics. My story centers on a clash between New York City and Chicago, and I couldn’t be more excited about getting this crazy, bombastic concept out into the world.

MIKE CAREY: My story in the anthology is an autobiographical piece about growing up in Liverpool in the middle of the last century, a time that in some ways feels as distant as the late Jurassic. I’m trying to make sense of the disconnect between the world I knew as a kid and the world I live in now. It’s also a story about the way memories work and the way we constantly try to build a coherent narrative out of the incoherent facts of our lives. I’ve slipped biographical details into stories before, but I’ve never written a fully autobiographical story. I’m excited to see how it comes out, not least because Szymon Kudranski is doing the art, and I can’t wait to see how my life looks in his gorgeous black and white palette.

FRANK TIERI: My story is called “Little Red Hood,” and you can think of it as basically “Little Red Riding Hood” as if it was a Quentin Tarantino movie. The familiar fairy tale is instead set up as a big drug deal gone horribly wrong. So in our case, Red is a drug courier delivering a package to the biggest drug dealer in town– that of course being Grandma– and then rival drug dealer “The Wolf” arrives, and everything hits the fan. It’s over-the-top, ultra-violent, and very much not the beloved Brothers Grimm yarn we all grew up with. So yeah, this ain’t a beddy bye story you’ll be reading to your kids anytime soon. Or at least it sure as hell shouldn’t be!

MARGUERITE BENNETT: AfterShock has given me the most creative freedom I’ve had in my entire career–I’m always delighted to submit these twisted pitches and hear back that this is the one place those strangest stories can find a home. For my own part, my story is a family revenge drama set in a Border town in the 1970s–a ghastly little tale about the gifts that give and the gifts that take. I’m thrilled to be a part of such a splendid anthology.

PHIL HESTER: I feel privileged to work with one of my all-time comics heroes in Jim Starlin. Our short story “Berserker” is a prime example of Jim’s unique ability to marry very personal narratives with cosmic action and timeless imponderables. I hope I can do it justice.

How Two Classic Comic Artists Influenced My Horror Illustrations for The Pit

Don Heck and Richard Corben are two giants in the world of horror illustration. Inspired by the imagination of Heck and an early technique of Corben’s, I rcently wrote and illustrated “The Pit,” which you can learn more about below.

The Heck Influence:
First, Don Heck. When I’m looking for story inspiration, there is no better means to shock my creative juices than classic horror comic covers from the 1950s. Heck did a lot of them! His drawing style is not like mine – I come from a painting background – but his twisted creativity; his dynamic, in your face composition; and his beautifully balanced layouts are worth study for anyone who appreciates horror art.

When I came across Heck’s 1952 cover for Weird Terror showing a doomed man dragged into a hellish pit by a monster, something clicked. Without knowing the story in the Weird Terror issue, I formulated my own story and called it “The Pit.”

Before even knowing where the story was going, I started the first page splash illustration. In the typical comic book method, I sketched a “thumbnail,” a small idea of what I was doing. Since I hadn’t been in an actual hell-pit for a long time, I then gathered some photo references to aid the actual drawing.

The first step: an inked line art piece. Now the fun part!

The Corben Influence:
I’ve been enjoying Richard Corben’s painted work for years, since I first discovered him in early ’70s indie comics – they were called “underground” then. His art in Slow Death and Fantagor, and his subsequent work in Creepy and Eerie, influenced generations of artists.

Especially Corben’s colors. Wonderfully crazy, painterly, and over-saturated, Corben’s early color work was amazingly different than anything else at the time. Recently I found out why…

Richard Corben put color on his beautiful Warren magazine work himself by masking off negatives and burning his own printing press plates. I won’t go into detail about negatives and plates in this world of computers. Just believe me when I say Corben’s technique must have been crazy difficult. There would have been no way to check his color until pages were on the press. The color mix was all in his head!

It had been rumbling around in my own head that I might be able to achieve that rich, oversaturated look if I thought about Corben’s technique.

He began with black and white art, like most comic book art, but his boards are a wonder to see, inked, painted, ink washes, painted white highlights.

So I tried something new. This is the first time I’ve grayscaled shadows in a separate Photoshop layer, then used those grays to color. I then separated color blocks in Photoshop to work with them.

Pulling from my painting background, I unified much of this with a red “wash.” The result was an underpainting I used to enhance with more paint on top. I’m pleased with the results: a deep shadowed, painterly look.

“The Pit” worked out to be the story of a young woman and her companion in an underground cavern, trying to piece together how they got there. As usually happens in my horror stories, bloodshed ensues!

“The Pit” is a story I’m giving away during my Zombies’ End graphic novel Kickstarter beginning January 16, 2018. I’m excited to share my projects, art, video and other updates. If you want me to share with you, visit StrangeHorror.com and join the Aazurn Fan List!

It seems we’ve been hearing that a Bubba Ho-Tep sequel is on its way for years now, but today we have news that another installment is actually coming…

In comic book form.

The new comic series, a prequel, will be kicking off in March of 2018 and is called Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers.  Read on for the details!

From the Press Release:
Hail to the King, baby! Prior to the events of the original Bubba Ho-Tep cult story, Elvis was enlisted by President Nixon to defeat an alien threat unlike anything he’s faced before. IDW and award-winning writer Joe R. Lansdale present: Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers!

“Bubba Ho-Tep was an accidental story that turned out to be my first film adaptation, and it’s still going strong in story and film,” said Lansdale. “And finally, it has inspired a background story that was first a novel and is now represented in the medium that first made me want to be a writer: comics. Graphic novels. What we used to call ‘funny books.’ I’m excited and looking forward to readers discovering it all in color and looking fine. May more Bubba comics burst into existence and give the world the true story of how the world has been protected from evil, and for quite some time. Thank goodness these defenders are out there, working in the shadows.”

In adapting this acclaimed work for comics, Lansdale will be joined by writer Joshua Jabcuga and artist Tadd Galusha (Godzilla: Rage Across Time) to help bring the story to terrifying life. Part of a secret government organization designed to protect civilians, Elvis Presley and a group of hardcore warriors set out to save the world from an invasion of hive-minded, shape-shifting, vampire-like creatures from a dark dimension.

Issue 1 arrives this March with covers by Galusha, Baldemar Rivas, and Timothy Truman.

Hell, yeah.

While I’m still a bit disappointed we will not be seeing Bubba Nosferatu directed by Don Coscarelli any time soon, this new comic is surely one to look forward to. What do you think? Let us know below!

A wise man once said, “Don’t cross the streams!” However, we don’t think he was counting on this! Ghostbusters: Crossing Over is the massive 8-issue event series IDW Publishing’s line of Ghostbusters comics has been leading up to featuring the original Ghostbusters, the “Answer the Call” crew, and everyone in between from the world of animation and video games. Just as exciting as seeing all of these Ghostbusters form the ultimate team-up, this series also sees the return of the fan-favorite creative team of Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, and Luis Antonio Delgado!

“This story has something for everyone who has ever loved an iteration of the Ghostbusters,” said series writer Burnham. “The Prime team from the original movies? There. The Real Ghostbusters? Present. The Extreme team? Accounted for. Not to mention the characters from the video games, the 2016 movie, and the originals we’ve created for the comics! If you don’t like one character, don’t worry; we have others! BUNCHES of others.”

“The biggest challenges from an artistic perspective is emulating the styles of the Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Sanctum of Slime, and any other teams that may pop up,” said series artist Schoening. “Not only do we want to honor the distinct look of the characters, but also the backgrounds and ghouls. Luckily and gratefully, we have already had a chance to play with many of those characters in previous books.”

Ghostbusters: Crossing Over #1 arrives this March with covers by Joe Quinones, Dan Schoening, and Tim Lattie.

Synopsis:
For a while now, the original Ghostbusters have had access to an interdimensional portal that has given them all-new ways to research the paranormal and consult with Ghostbusters throughout the multiverse. Tonight at 7pm PST, those nuts at Eibon Press are making horror history again with their third pressing of the  first issue of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie.  Those of you who are hard core “Eibonites” know that these guys have been kicking ALL the ass in the past two years, with some of the most incredible, game-changing horror comics of all time, mostly all based on classic horror and sleaze films from the 1980s.

Their series based on the immortal classic Zombie, directed by Lucio Fulci has been  best-seller for Eibon, with the first issue already selling out two print runs!  By popular demand, they’ve brought the issue back into print with a stunning “eibon sleeve” cover that re-creates the classic movie poster as an incredible oil painting by Hollywood monster artist Mike Broom of “The Walking Dead” and The Cabin in the Woods.  Check it out:

This is one of the thing that makes Eibon books totally different, folks.  They all come packaged in these high end record sleeves, that make them highly collectible and super cool.  Inside the sleeve, you get the comic, plus lots of little extras, like collectors prints and such.

Plus, they just informed us that they’re doing an INSANE offer for this weekend only, where you can order all five currently available issue sod Zombie and get the shipping thrown in for free.  Check this out:

It’s a great time to be a horror collector, and those guys have ALL the juice.

Lucio Fulci’s Zombie #1 will be available tonight at 7pm, only through their website, EibonPress.com!

Cartoonist Kevin D. Clark is back with more sights to show you for 2018, kicking off with a look at a long-awaited horror flick through the eyes of a youngster. Dig it!

Kevin D. Clark is a cartoonist from Scotland who grew up watching classic monster movies, cartoons and wrestling, as well as reading comics. He started drawing at an early age and hasn’t stopped since. His sense of humor is a veritable cornucopia of the wacky and weird inspired by the likes of Monty Python, Mel Brooks, “MST3K,” Rab C. Nesbitt, as well as his older brother.

Kevin was diagnosed with Aspergers and because of that, he tries to push himself to work as hard as possible. Kevin also has a self-published comic book and helps run a film club for autistic people. He has recently earned a degree in cartooning from the London Art College and he’s pretty sure that he could take an octopus in a fight.
